In 2000, Jeff and Dwayne pooled their money and bought a skid steer to rent out. Twenty-six years later, Universal is one of Chilliwack’s top civil contractors, and they’re both still running the company they started.

Owner-Operated Civil Contractor · How We’re Different

You get us. Not an office.

Run by the owners

Jeff and Dwayne are highly involved with every project site, so the decisions come from the people who own the company.

Family-business care, big-company capacity

A full fleet of dump trucks, excavators, and low-beds, and the same attention on a barn pad as a subdivision.

On time and on budget

We build the schedule around how the work really goes. Hundreds of repeat clients say it holds.

Safe, current, reinvested

A real safety program built on WorkSafeBC and OH&S practices. We value our people, our iron, and the members of our community.

26 Years of Civil Construction in the Fraser Valley

From side hustle to top three.

2000 · The skid steer

Bought to rent out. Within months a local developer asked the two of them to take on exterior concrete prep instead. Nights and weekends turned into a company.

The first machine

Dwayne and Jeff got their first $200,000 excavator on a rental-purchase. A dealer took a chance on two guys under 30, and the company got real.

GPS in the cab

In 2010 they became one of the first crews in the region to run GPS machine control. Operators work off a 3D model of the site, right in the cab.

Today · The optimum size

Big enough to take on a full subdivision, small enough that Jeff and Dwayne still have their finger on the pulse of every project. Universal’s focus is quality of service over quantity of jobs.

Owner-Operators Dwayne & Jeff

Two expertises. Zero overlap.

Jeff

The office side

Bidding, engineers, and problem-solving on site. Carpentry apprenticeship, then running federal construction projects by 27. Also a paid-on-call firefighter and certified rope-rescue technician, a credential that has saved clients real money on steep-slope work.

Dwayne

The dirt and iron side

The operator expert. Fleet, dispatch, logistics, the people on the machines, and the problem-solving when the ground doesn’t match the drawings. Came up through pipeline and foundation work, still running the iron after 26 years.

“A huge part of our success is that we do two completely different things, and they don’t overlap.”

Jeff, co-owner

A Family-Run Construction Company

The next generation is already on site.

Friends first

Jeff and Dwayne have been friends since they were kids. They promised each other a business by 30, and they’ve run it together for 26 years.

Josh & Colton

Jeff’s and Dwayne’s sons, both in the field with ownership stakes and just as much passion as the founders who built it.

Chilliwack raised

Both owners grew up here. The roads and subdivisions they build are in their own backyard, and they build them that way.

The name

Suggested by a family member. They wanted a name that said they could do it all, from the ground down. Twenty-six years later, it still fits.
